We are all born with different hair types, ranging from straight to wavy and curly to kinky! These hair types are categorised by the numbers 1 to 4. There are also different degrees of wave, curl or absence thereof and thickness within each hair type, denoted by the letters a, b & c.
So what is the reason behind these different hair textures and patterns?
Each hair shaft is made up of keratins and other proteins which contain sulphur atoms. When two sulphur atoms join together they form a disulphide bond. If the sulphur atoms in a protein are far apart and form a bond, the protein will bend over, thus creating a curl. The frequency of disulphide links formed between hair proteins is responsible for how straight, wavy, curly or coily your hair is.
